Rod and his wife Joan moved to Clarenville in 1974 where they raised their children Stephanie and Steven.
He holds a Bachelor of Physical Education and a Bachelor of Education degree from Memorial University and in 1995 he completed a Master of Physical Education degree. His career, in the education field spanned thirty years as Teacher, Program Coordinator in Physical Education and Health and a School Administrator retiring in 2004 from Clarenville Middle School.
He has been an active volunteer in the community. His early days of volunteering in Clarenville included membership the Kinsmen club and serving on the board of the Clarenville Athletic Recreation Association where he worked on many community projects. In 1988, he was honoured by the Lion’s Club as Clarenville’s Citizen of the Year. In 1992, he received the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canada for his volunteerism and in 2017, he was recognized as one of the ‘150 faces of Clarenville’ celebrating 150 years of Confederation.
He has served on council for four terms starting in 1997 and chaired committees in Recreation and Community Development along with Beautification and the Environment taking a lead role in the Tidy Town’s and Adopt a Spot programs.
He was instrumental in bringing the Provincial Winter Games program to Clarenville resulting in successful bids in 1994 and 2014 and served on the host committee of both. He also co-chaired the first Vista Regional Youth games. He has held positions with the Clarenville Area Recreation Association including President and Vice Chair and served four years as President of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador in his twenty-year involvement.
Over the years, he has volunteer in a variety of programs and events such as Clarenville Days, Winter Carnival and has organized community sporting opportunities such as curling and pickleball. Under his leadership as President, the newly formed Clarenville Area Pickleball League and CARA were recently honored with the ‘ Gary Milley’ Community award from Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador for the development of this community-based program. He was a member of the Random Age Friendly board and serves as a Crest Bus Driver.
He is encouraged by Clarenville’s growth and development, and he is proud to be a part of the strategic planning for the future. Building a community that offers a safe, active and healthy lifestyle for it’s residents.
