Employment Opportunity: Heavy Equipment Technician (Temporary)

The Town of Clarenville is presently accepting applications for the Temporary Full-time position of Heavy Equipment Technician to be located at Town’s Public Works Depot located at 24 Hardwoods Road. The contract term is for 8 weeks.

DUTIES: The successful candidate will report directly to the Manager of Public Works and/or the Mechanics Working Foreperson. This position is responsible for diagnosing problems and carrying out repairs and maintenance of the Town of Clarenville’s municipal fleet. Equipment includes dump trucks, loaders, snow plows, snow blowers, excavators, backhoes, graders, generators, pickups, lift stations, traffic lights etc. Work involves repairing, rebuilding and fabricating parts and components of heavy equipment and light duty vehicles, vehicle systems and related equipment. All work duties shall be performed in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and safe work practices pertaining to the workplace and equipment. The position also performs emergency road services and makes field repairs, as well as other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum qualifications for this position are as follows:

  • Certification as a Heavy Equipment Technician is required (registered and in good standing with the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador);
  • Successful completion of Block 3 or 4 from a recognized post-secondary Heavy Equipment Technician Program would be considered an asset;
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in diagnosing and repairing heavy equipment and light duty vehicles is required;
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and safe work practices is required;
  • Experience in electric welding and acetylene cutting is considered an asset;
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out verbal and written instructions accurately and quickly and to deal with people in a tactful, diplomatic manner;
  • Must have own tools and toolbox. Tools must include a selection capable from a Journeyperson to perform any type of a required function;
  • Must be physically fit to perform the above duties;
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Salary and benefits as per the current Collective Agreement.
