Dr. Albert O’Mahoney was the first physician to open a full-time practice in Clarenville and also served on the Town Council. During his 43-year practice, he gained respect as a businessman, a devoted physician and member of the community.<\/div><\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
In the late 1960s, Clarenville did not have a medical clinic or a permanent physician. The Clarenville Area Chamber of Commerce resolved to establish a clinic in order to attract one of its visiting physicians, Dr. Albert O\u2019Mahony.<\/div><\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
With the help of public donations totaling $12,000 and a local bank loan, a medical clinic was constructed. Dr. O\u2019Mahony rented this clinic and became Clarenville\u2019s first permanent doctor.<\/div><\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
In 1972, Dr. O\u2019Mahony bought the clinic from the Chamber for $27,000, which was invested to be used for future medical facilities. The investment grew to $96,000 by 1989. At this time, the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital had already been built. The Chamber decided to donate the entire investment to the new hospital to develop a room in the hospital and to purchase a CO2 surgical laser.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

O’Mahony ex\u00adpand\u00aded the med\u00adi\u00adcal build\u00ading to cre\u00adate more space for health\u00adcare spe\u00adcial\u00adists in Clarenville. Un\u00adder his su\u00adper\u00advi\u00adsion, the med\u00adi\u00adcal cen\u00adtre added two physi\u00adcians, a den\u00adtist, a phar\u00admacy, a lab and X-ray ser\u00advices.<\/p>

\u201cAl\u00adbert was in\u00addeed an en\u00adtre\u00adpre\u00adneur, and the busi\u00adness he es\u00adtab\u00adlished con\u00adtrib\u00aduted to the econ\u00adomy of this area,\u201d Dr. Harold Crewe said. He worked along\u00adside O\u2019Ma\u00adhony.<\/p>

O\u2019Ma\u00adhony\u2019s busi\u00adness be\u00adcame a suc\u00adcess\u00adful en\u00adter\u00adprise, fill\u00ading a grow\u00ading need for med\u00adi\u00adcal ser\u00advices in the Clarenville area.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cTo me, Al\u00adbert was much more than Dr. O\u2019Ma\u00adhony. He was a men\u00adtor, a col\u00adleague, a com\u00adrade and very trusted friend,\u201d said Dr. Blaine Pearce, an\u00adother for\u00admer col\u00adleague. \u201cAl\u00adbert O\u2019Ma\u00adhony was not just a doc\u00adtor, but the doc\u00adtor \u2014 the one that all of his col\u00adleagues mea\u00adsure our\u00adselves by.\u201d<\/p>

Both doc\u00adtors spoke of O\u2019Ma\u00adhony\u2019s long hours with pa\u00adtients, the house calls he made, his com\u00admu\u00adnity in\u00advolve\u00adment and his life as a ded\u00adi\u00adcated fam\u00adily man.<\/p>

\u201cHe\u2019d al\u00adways end by say\u00ading, \u2018OK, all right, fair enough\u2019 \u2014 as if to say, leave it with me, you don\u2019t need to re\u00admind me again; it will be done,\u201d said Crewe.<\/p><\/div>

Born in Ireland, Dr. O’Mahony came to Newfoundland in the early Sixties. He moved to Clarenville in 1969 where he practiced medicine up to his passing. When Albert first came to Clarenville, he was the only physician in the community and for a while he operated a clinic out of his home.<\/div><\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
Albert was a well known doctor in Clarenville, the surrounding areas and throughout Newfoundland. He was highly respected for always going above and beyond \u201cthe call of duty\u201d in his passion and commitment for patient care. Up until the time of his passing, his patients could still depend on him to make house visits.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
In addition to his medical practice, he served a term on Clarenville’s Town Council and and as a director of the Clarenville Area Chamber of Commerce, which he was a member of throughout his entire career.\u00a0<\/div><\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
He died suddenly at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital on October 22, 2007 at the age of 64 leaving to mourn his loving wife, Donna, sons, Michael and David, and daughter, Ashling.<\/div><\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
Today, the Dr. Albert O’Mahony Memorial Manor, a 44-bed long term-care facility on Manitoba Drive, bears his name.\u00a0He was inducted into the Chamber’s Business Hall of Fame in 2009.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>
